Every file.As you type.

Everyfile is a file search for Mac that finds every file by name as you type, on every drive: internal, external, even unplugged.

Free · macOS 14 or later · Apple silicon · v0.9.0

This beta is not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS blocks the first launch. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.

This demo runs in your browser on made-up file names. The app itself is native and searches millions of real files.

One million files read in 2.2 seconds

An external USB drive is a different race. Our FAT32 test SSD delivers about 12,000 files per second whatever the app, so 150,000 files take around 12 seconds.

  • Everyfile0.0 s
  • fts0.0 s
  • find0.0 s
  • FileManager0.0 s

Measured on a MacBook with an M4 Pro chip: 1.02 million files, internal SSD, release build, warm cache. fts, find and FileManager are the usual ways Mac tools read folders. Shorter is better. After the first read, Everyfile only reads what changed.

How it stays instant

  1. First it reads every drive once.

One pass over the file system, all cores at once. On the internal SSD that is 7.3 million files in 25 seconds.

  2. Then it keeps a small index.

Names and a few facts per file, mapped from a snapshot on disk. Under 80 MB of memory per million files.

  3. You type, the file is there.

The list updates on every keystroke. With 2 million names, 95 of 100 keystrokes were answered within 5 milliseconds.

  4. Change a file, the index follows.

macOS reports what changed, even while Everyfile is closed. Rename a file in the list with F2 and the index is up to date at once.

Duplicates

Finds copies by size, then by a hash of start and end, then by the whole file. Spots the same song in another format and suggests which version to keep, lossless first. Exports a list as CSV or M3U. The finder itself never changes a file. Optional acoustic matching if fpcalc is installed.
